Brit of the Week

Felix Gill entered the ITF event in Zaragoza and was the eighth seed. The Brit was against Italian Gabriele Pennaforti. The first set was extremely close, as Pennaforti stayed with the seed and forced a tiebreak. In the breaker Gill edged through to take the lead. This seemed to break the Italian spirit, as the next set was much easier for the Brit. Gill dominated and moved into the next round 7-6(5), 6-1.

In the second round Gill was against qualifier Kuzey Cekirge. The Turk managed to stay with the Brit at the start of the first set. However, eventually, the seed broke serve and into the lead. The second set was more of the same. Cekirge tried to get back into the match, but Gill was just too good and eased through in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

The quarter-final saw Gill against fourth seed Carlos Lopez Montagud. The first set was close as the Spaniard stayed toe to toe with Gill. Eventually, Gill broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw Gill break early and the Spaniard was unable to get back on terms. The Brit moved into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

In the semi-final the Brit was against second seed Mathys Erhard. The Frenchman found Gill too good in the first set. Gill broke early in the first set to take the lead. The second set was a bit closer, Erhard stayed with the Brit, before Gill broke serve and moved into the final in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

The final saw Gill against qualifier Julio Cesar Porras. The Argentine stayed with the Brit in the first set, before the seed broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw Gill dominate the Argentine. Porras was unable to get into the serve of the Brit and Gill took the title 6-4, 6-1.
