H2H: Cameron Norrie (WR 30) Joao Fonseca (WR 242)
Tournament Previous Best R3 (2022) N/A
1st Serve % 60.7 61.7
Service Games Won % 81.4 76
Break Points Saved % 63.5 46.5
2nd Serve Return Points Won % 52.4 56.3
Break Points Converted % 38.4 42.9

Fonseca has been more consistent on return but will need to improve on serve as Norrie is well above the young Brazilian in that department this season.

Playing styles and prediction

Already at 17 years old, Fonseca has proven he belongs at this level and continued to show that in Bucharest as he recorded two good wins over Lorenzo Sonego and Radu Albot. Now the Brazilian will look to capitalize on gaining a wildcard in Madrid as he enters this match having already won his first ever match at Masters 1000 level.

Norrie will use a mixture of pace and depth to force Fonseca behind the baseline as the Brit aims to set up aggressive patterns of play with the use of angles. Meanwhile Fonseca will look to produce pure power on both sides in order to protect his weak second serve. This will be a tough match for Norrie especially in the faster conditions which suit Fonseca’s big-hitting style. However Norrie should have too much quality in order to squeeze through a tough first match.

Prediction: Norrie in three sets.
