Cameron Norrie def. Jordan Thompson 7-5 4-6 6-4 6-3

The British No.2 Cameron Norrie evened up a packed day of action by becoming the second of the four Brits to make it onto the second round. Hot on the heels of Andy Murray’s advance, Norrie had to come from a break behind in the first set. His patience and tenacity paid off as he fended off a set point against him before breaking Jordan Thompson twice to take the lead.

It was almost a mirror image though in the second set with a break to Norrie, only to be broken in his last two service games for Thompson to even the match up. The competitive match up saw Norrie capitalise on his first break point chance and he held on to that to win the third set.

Things were a lot more decisive for the Brit, breaking twice to seal his place in the second round.

Norrie v Dusan Lajovic | First meeting

Norrie already has one thing over his next opponent Dusan Lajovic as the Serbian reached the second round at the US open for the first time. Lajovic is perhaps more known as a clay court player, but his hefty serve can also make him pretty dangerous on a hard court. He has the power behind his groundstrokes, with a solid forehand from the baseline, and on a hard court we might expect to see him serve and volley a bit more.

However outside of a Challenger title earlier this year, his hard-court results on the tour have really been nothing to write home about.

Norrie’s ability to do a little bit of everything has given the variety to adapt very quickly to what is going on. His forehand can probably match Lajovic’s and if he can play consistently with a lot of variety, he ought to take himself into new heights at the US Open.

Prediction: Norrie in four sets.

Norrie & Lajovic are scheduled on Court  10 not before 2:30pm (7:30pm BST).
