It was a successful main draw debut for Britain’s Jodie Burrage, as she eased into the second round with a straight sets win over Varvara Gracheva. She had to overcome a quick start after losing her first service game to the more experienced Frenchwoman but broke back immediately. She broke Gracheva again towards the end of the first set before serving out the first set to love.

With the momentum clearly on her side, Burrage broke Gracheva three times to round out a comprehensive victory.

Playing Styles & Prediction

After a slow start to her year in Australia, Burrage has picked up the pace with two qualifying wins and now a main draw victory, claiming the top 50 scalp of Gracheva in the process. She has been inside the Top 100 but slipped back slightly and is bidding for only her second tour=level quarter-final.

Cristian also came back from Australia struggling for form, and lost to Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the final qualifying round, but defeated Nadia Podoroska  with her main draw ticket. And the Romanian has good memories of this event, finishing as the runner-up three years ago.

Burrage will be facing another player who is solid from the baseline and has powerful groundstrokes, but she managed to cope with the same from Gracheva and will want to find her feet quickly.

Prediction: Burrage in three sets.
