Taylor Fritz def. Sam Querrey 6-3 6-4

In a match that was hardly going to have a number of rallies, the big-serving Americans battered the cover off many a ball, but it was Taylor Fritz who started the most aggressive, breaking the former Wimbledon semi-finalist on his first try, and holding on to that advantage for the first set.

Fritz broke early at the start of the second set, and again held Sam Querrey at bay as his only break point chance had come in the first set, and while he saved another point on his next serve, he found no way in as Fritz hung on for the win.

Fritzโ€™s previous final was in Memphis in 2016, where he entered as a wildcard, so this win left the 21-year-old overjoyed.

“It’s unbelievable, the feeling still hasn’t fully set in. I have wanted to win a title for so long, ever since making the final in Memphis when I was so young. I have been thinking about it for a long time. I’m so happy I finally got it.”

Querrey, who last played in Houston before taking 11-weeks off to deal with an abdominal injury had nothing but praise for Fritz.

“He’s really wanted a title ever since (Memphis). Every young player does. It’s probably a little weight off his shoulders to kind of get that first title under his belt. Hopefully he wins a lot more titles down the road. He’s a great player, he’s got a dangerous game, and will hopefully just continue to rise in the rankings and have more results like this.”
