Brit of the Week

Jacob Fearnley entered the ATP Challenger event in Rennes and was the eighth seed. In the first round the Brit drew Benoit Paire. The unseeded Frenchman was no match for the seed. In the first set Fearnley barely put a foot wrong as he dominated and lost only one game to claim the set. The second set was even better for the seed as the Brit once again dominated and moved into the next round 6-1, 6-0.

The second round saw the Brit against another Frenchman, this time wildcard Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg. The Frenchman dominated the first set, as Fearnley struggled to get into the match. Gueymard Wayenburg eased through the first set and into the lead. The Brit however, re-grouped in the second set and dominated to level up the match. The final set was closer, as each fought hard to claim the win. However, it was Fearnley that eventually secured the break of serve to move into the next round 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

In the quarter-final the Brit was against the top seed Adrian Mannarino. Fearnley secured an early break of serve as the top seed was unable to break back, so the eighth seed had the lead. The second set was more of the same. Once again, Fearnley broke the Mannarino serve and moved into the next round in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

The semi-final saw Fearnley against third seed Harold Mayot. The first set set was fairly event at the start. Eventually, though the Brit broke the Mayot serve and took the lead. The second set saw Fearnley dominate as Mayot struggled to keep pace. The Brit moved into the final in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

In the final Fearnley was against fourth seed Quentin Halys. The Frenchman got the better start and dominated. The Brit struggled to get into the match and soon was a set down. However, Fearnley was not giving up. The eighth seed re-grouped and forced a tiebreak in the second set, which the Brit won to level up the match. The final set saw Halys try to get the upper hand, however, Fearnley was not having it. Securing the vital break needed, the eighth seed took the match and the title, defeating five French players en route 0-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.
