Evans will need to be aggressive on serve especially given Fognini’s returning efficiency this season as the Brit has been very poor on his own return this season.

Playing styles and prediction

Fognini has been struggling with injuries and form as the end of his career approaches its conclusion. Now the Italian will search for one last memorable moment in front of his passionate fans in Rome as he builds momentum towards Roland Garros.

Evans will look to be aggressive on serve and put pressure on Fognini’s baseline game as he uses angles to test the Italian’s athleticism. Meanwhile Fognini will aim to produce an unpredictable mix of power and variety to keep Evans guessing and test the Brit’s confidence. Neither player are in good form and Fognini’s previous history in Rome would suggest he will be too strong in this match. However expect the unexpected as two combustible elements collide in Italy.

Prediction: Fognini in three sets. Β Β Β Β Β
