Brit of the Week
Emily Appleton was the top seed in the ITF event. The Brit drew Spaniard Victoria Gomez O’Hayon in the first round. The first set was fairly close as both fought hard to get the break of serve. Eventually, Appleton got the vital break and moved ahead. The second set was easier for the top seed, who dominated and moved into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
The second round saw the Brit against American qualifier Klara Kosan. In the first set, the Brit broke early and then eased through to take the lead. The second set was more of the same. The American tried to stay with the top seed, but eventually, Appleton secured the break of serve and took the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
In the quarter-final the top seed was against another American Fiona Crawley. Appleton and the American stayed close in the first set, before the Brit secured the break of serve and took the lead. The second set saw Crawley mount a fight back and force a tiebreak. In the breaker the American eased through and levelled up the match. The final set saw the Brit dominate and move into the next round 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2.
The semi-final saw the Brit against Valentina Ivanov. The Kiwi stayed with the top seed early on, before Appleton broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw Appleton dominate Ivanov, who struggled to hold serve. The Kiwi was soon overwhelmed and the Brit moved into the next round 6-3, 6-1.
In the final the Brit was against fifth seed Malaika Rapolu. The American stayed with Appleton at the start of the first set, before the top seed secured the break of serve and took the lead. The second set saw Rapolu re-group and break the Brit to level up the match. The final set was a repeat of the first set, as Appleton secured the break of serve and lifted the title 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
