If Evans wants to beat Khachanov for a fifth time in a row then he needs to be much more efficient in return or face an early exit.

Playing styles and prediction

Khachanov has had a very poor season and will be hoping he can gain some form of momentum heading into next season. The 28 year-old seems to have lost that consistent power that he used to have but he will be hoping the faster conditions in New York plays into his hands.

Evans will aim to use his effective slice to force unforced errors from Khachanov’s game and will need to take his chances on return. Meanwhile Khachanov will look to gain confidence on serve as he will force Evans into uncomfortable positions by using his forehand. This will be a tough match for Evans with doubts remaining over his stamina and fitness. Stylistically Evans is favourite here but in terms of consistency Khachanov could just prove to be too strong here.

Prediction: Khachanov in five sets.
