Best Result: Champion (2018, 2021)

After a disappointing last couple of months, Zverev earned a crucial title on home soil in Munich and is aiming to keep up the momentum in Madrid.

Zverev’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: BYE | H2H: N/A
  • R2: Jaume Munar | H2H: Tied at 1-1
  • R3: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina [28] | H2H: Zverev leads 4-1
  • R4: Arthur Fils [13] | H2H: Zverev leads 3-2
  • QF: Andrey Rublev [7] | H2H: Zverev leads 7-3
  • SF: Taylor Fritz [3] | H2H: Fritz leads 7-5
  • F: Carlos Alcaraz [2] | H2H: Zverev leads 6-5

It’s a nightmare first couple of rounds for Zverev with either Roberto Bautista Agut or Jaume Munar awaiting in the opening round for the German. Then a showdown with Monte-Carlo semi-finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will await before the in-form Arthur Fils will await in a blockbuster fourth round clash. The latter stages of the tournament look more favourable for Zverev but given the German’s tough start to the tournament, a showdown against Alcaraz in the final looks unlikely with all of the in-form players in the top seed’s section of the draw.

Best Result: Champion (2022, 2023)

After disappointment in the Barcelona final, Alcaraz is aiming to get back on track by regaining his Madrid title.

Alcaraz’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: BYE | H2H: N/A
  • R2: Zizou Bergs | H2H: First Meeting
  • R3: Jiri Lehecka [26] | H2H: Tied at 1-1
  • R4: Grigor Dimitrov [15] | H2H: Alcaraz leads 4-2
  • QF: Alex De Minaur [6] | H2H: Alcaraz leads 4-0
  • SF: Novak Djokovic [4] | H2H: Djokovic leads 5-3
  • F: Alexander Zverev [1] | H2H: Zverev leads 6-5

It will be a tricky start for Alcaraz against Zizou Bergs and last year’s Madrid semi-finalist Jiri Lehecka. The Spaniard should be in confident form and rhythm by the time he faces either Grigor Dimitrov or Tomas Machac in the fourth round with Stefanos Tsitsipas or Lorenzo Musetti most likely to be the quarter-final match. All in all Alcaraz should reach the semi-finals at least and will be out to prove a point if he ends up facing Djokovic in the last four as he continues his road to Roland Garros.

Best Result: Semi-Final (2024)

Fritz will look to step up his game over the clay court season after an impressive showing at last year’s tournament.

Fritz’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: BYE | H2H: N/A
  • R2: Camilo Ugo Carabelli | H2H: Fritz leads 1-0
  • R3: Hubert Hurkacz [27] | H2H: Fritz leads 4-1
  • R4: Casper Ruud [14] | H2H: Ruud leads 2-1
  • QF: Holger Rune [8] | H2H: Fritz leads 2-1
  • SF: Alexander Zverev [1] | H2H: Fritz leads 7-5
  • F: Carlos Alcaraz [2] | H2H: Alcaraz leads 2-0

A potentially rough start for Fritz in the form of clay courter Camilo Ugo Carabelli. A potential third round showdown against either Hubert Hurkacz or Marin Cilic should be comfortable for the American ahead of a fourth round meeting against the out-of-form Casper Ruud. A quarter-final showdown with Barcelona champion Holger Rune will be the last obstacle before a potential semi-final showdown with Zverev. After a comfortable opening to the tournament, Fritz may struggle to have the consistency to reach the latter stages of the tournament.

Best Result: Champion (2011, 2016, 2019)

After another early exit in Monte-Carlo, Djokovic will hope he can build momentum towards Roland Garros with a fourth Madrid title.

Djokovic’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: BYE | H2H: N/A
  • R2: Matteo Arnaldi | H2H: First Meeting
  • R3: Sebastian Baez [32] | H2H: First Meeting
  • R4: Frances Tiafoe [16] | H2H: Djokovic leads 2-0
  • QF: Jack Draper [5] | H2H: Djokovic leads 1-0
  • SF: Carlos Alcaraz [2] | H2H: Djokovic leads 5-3
  • F: Alexander Zverev [1] | H2H: Djokovic leads 8-5

An tough first couple of matches await for Djokovic in the form of Matteo Arnaldi and Sebastian Baez as they will aim to test the Serb’s movement on clay. In the fourth round Djokovic could face Frances Tiafoe before Jack Draper or Matteo Berrettini could be the quarter-final test for the fourth seed. This will be a testing tournament for Djokovic and will test where his game is at but the Serb knows that Rome will be a true reflection of his Roland Garros title hopes.

Madrid begins on the 23rd of April and ends on the fourth of May.
