It has been a while since Emma Raducanu has had a roll at a tournament, but she made the quarter-finals in Miami – and in the past has reached the round of 16 in Madrid, on her debut in 2022. Having withdrawn the Billie Jean King Cup team, Raducanu arrives in Madrid with no clay under her shoes.

Suzan Lemens was the one who beat Katie Boulter that weekend, so is not necessarily an easy start for Raducanu, especially seeing as she reached the semi-final in Rouen, claiming the scalp of another US Open champion, Bianca Andreescu in the first round.

Prediction: Raducanu in three sets.

After distressing scenes in Bogota where Francesca Jones collapsed in the deciding set, she returned to clay court action in the Oeiras ITF event, and has fought through a couple of tough rounds of qualifying to make the first round, where she is making her debut in this event.

However, clay tends to be Jones’ fall-back, but faces another potentially tough task against Dayana Yastremska, who has been rising up the ranks at a rapid pace this year. The Ukrainian made the third-round last year – her best performance to date, and possibly has a little too much fire power for the Brit.

Prediction: Yastremska in three sets.

Sonay Kartal more than played her part in Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup success with two wns pn clay, but that did not translate to success in Rouen, where she was bundled out of the first round. She splits the head-to-head with Jacqueline Cristian, who also faltered in Rouen.

This could be a tight one – Kartal beat Cristian in Monastir on the way to her first title, which should give the Brit confidence.

Prediction: Kartal in three sets.
