Kyle Edmund earned his first ATP win for two years with an impressive 6-4 7-6(8) victory over Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki. It was by no means a comfortable win but Edmund came back from a break down in the second set and a deficit in the tiebreak to seal an important victory and is showing signs of that powerful forehand that saw him climb up the rankings.
Next for Edmund is an all-British clash with Dan Evans with the 16th seed playing his first match since that humiliating opening round defeat to Jason Kubler at Wimbledon. Evans has had a long break to think about his performances and will be looking to prove a point in the US hard court swing which is his favourite time of year. Evans will be looking for back-to-back victories at an ATP event for the first time since Madrid this week.
Edmund will look to try to be as aggressive as possible while Evans will look to use his slice and angles to cause his fellow Brit problems. Should Edmund be in good form then this is his match to lose but this match might be too early in his comeback and Evans should edge to victory here with his fitness and stamina.
Prediction: Evans in three sets.

Jack Draper got back to winning ways with a 7-5 6-2 victory over wildcard Stefan Kozlov in his opening round. An assured and confident performance over a player that is lacking in form means that Draper is continuing to show the type of consistency that will one day see him at the very top of the men’s game.
Next for Draper is someone who is already at the top of the men’s game in the form of Andrey Rublev. After missing out on Wimbledon, Rublev is not heading into this match in the best form having not managed to reach a final in either Bastad or Hamburg in the last couple of weeks. Rublev will look to work his way back into form this week as the top seed as he looks for a deep run at the US Open.
Draper caused Rublev plenty of problems in their meeting in Madrid earlier this year on his weaker surface and the Brit should be able to do similar damage in this match. The Brit will look to be patient but aggressive as he looks to test Rublev’s form early on. While Rublev looks to display aggression on both forehand and backhand as he will look to dictate the tempo of the match from the beginning.
There is no better time to play Rublev given his form as well as this being his first match of the tournament and there is no reason why Draper shouldn’t win this match.
Prediction: Draper in three sets.
