Emma Raducanu continued to enjoy a season resurgence as she battled against a familiar opponent in Maria Sakkari, lengthening her head-to-head over the Greek. Twice she came from a break down to get the upper hand, showing some of the form that took her court smarts through the US Open charge when she won her first slam.

Raducanu has also had to come through some heavy duty opponents, including four-time Slam champion Naomi Osaka. Having reached the quarter-final twice before in her previous two appearances in Washington, she has a real chance to make an impressive start to the road to New York.

Raducanu’s second half of the year and a surge in the spring has set her up well stats wise over Kalinskaya.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Raducanu is in uncharted territory by reaching the semi-final – a position that Kalinskaya managed prior to the pandemic and has been quite steady over the year with a semi-final in Singapore and quarter-finals in Charleston and Strasbourg.

But in the US hard court spring fling, she lost in the opening round of Indian Wells and could not manage a back-to-back win in Miami. In fact, Washington is her best on the hard courts.

Again, we will see a game of baseline control – both play a forceful game and have strong groundstrokes. Kalinskaya favours hard courts and likes to let the point develop. This could be a risky tactic, as Raducanu is agile around the court, and has been working hard on the variety of her own shots.

Raducanu has the edge in terms of this year’s stats and the stability in the team around her has seen her grow in confidence.

Prediction: Raducanu in three sets.
