Sonay Kartal def Maya Joint 6-3 6-2
Sonay Kartal is into the fourth round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career after cruising past Maya Joint in Beijing. The Brit was in fine form in her first two matches and that continued as Kartal secured a quick double break lead for a 4-0 lead with some physical and clinical tennis. The confidence from Kartal continued to show although there were signs that Joint was coming back into the match.
An immediate break back from Joint was secured and the Australian played some consistently aggressive tennis to bounce back from losing her serve in the next game to break for a second time in the seventh game. However, Kartal restored her consistency on serve and used the forehand to create some excellent angles as the Brit comfortably closed out the opening set in 33 minutes.
A better start to the second set was produced by Joint but the world number 36 was still producing far too many errors at crucial stages in the match. In a tight third game, Kartal edged to a break of serve to take a 2-1 lead. There was no real resistance on return from Joint as Kartal continued to serve with authority and consistent intention, breaking down the Australian’s baseline game.
Another break of serve was secured by Kartal in the seventh game as she coasted into the last 16 in Beijing.

Playing styles and prediction
Andreeva has had a stunning breakthrough year where she has won WTA 1000 events and made Grand Slam semi-finals. However, the 18 year-old hasn’t had the best ending to the season which Andreeva looks to rectify as we approach the business end to the season with lots to learn and improve on for the future.
Kartal will need to be aggressive and will use the forehand to dictate play from the baseline. Meanwhile Andreeva will step inside the baseline on the backhand side and use variety to catch Kartal off guard. This will be a valuable experience for Kartal’s development but Andreeva’s better decision-making and variety should be the decisive factor here.
Prediction: Andreeva in straight sets.
