It wasn’t pretty but Coco Gauff produced another resilient performance to reach the last 16 in Beijing. A hard-fought win over Leylah Fernandez sees the American’s title defence continue into the fourth round as Gauff is desperate for some momentum. The Roland Garros champion’s sights are set on WTA Finals qualification in what has been a tough couple of months and Gauff will aim to continue her improvement on serve in order to book her ticket to Riyadh.

Standing in her way is a familiar foe in the form of Belinda Bencic who is once again producing impressive form. After reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals, Bencic is aiming to continue her incredible year as she has risen up the rankings after her hiatus from tennis. A mixture of power, effective decision-making and clinical returning has made her a threat on the tour and now Bencic is aiming to beat Gauff once again this year as she looks to reach the quarter-finals in Beijing.

Gauff is aiming to be aggressive and consistent on serve while using the backhand to force errors from Bencic’s game. Meanwhile, Bencic will use the forehands to dictate the rallies as she will use angles in her bid to hit winners. The slower conditions favour Gauff’s game but if Bencic can create some momentum then the Swiss will believe that she can deconstruct the American’s game once again.

Prediction: Gauff in three sets.

The incredible form of Amanda Anisimova shows no signs of slowing down as the American is into the last 16 in China. The 24 year-old is yet to drop a set in Beijing and has continued her incredible season which has seen her reach both the Wimbledon and US Open finals this year. However, Anisimova will be hoping that the best is yet to come as she targets more success this season and momentum heading into next year’s Australian Open where she hopes to be a top four seed.

Next up for Anisimova is Karolina Muchova who will be hoping to disrupt the Anisimova momentum. The Czech Republican benefited from another Paula Badosa retirement as Muchova moved into the fourth round. Usually it’s been Muchova who has suffered injuries but the 13th seed has been consistently fit over the last few months and producing some good results in the process. Now Muchova will look to raise her level and produce one of the best wins of her season so far.

Anisimova will aim to serve big and use the backhand to force Muchova into defensive positions. Meanwhile, Muchova will look to use the slice to force Anisimova to play shorter balls as the Czech Republican will aim to step into the baseline to attack the Anisimova forehand. This will be a big test for Anisimova but one the American will pass given her confidence and form.

Prediction: Anisimova in three sets.

After helping her nation win the Billie Jean King Cup, Jasmine Paolini is on a mission. After failing to meet the high standards from the year before, Paolini is targeting a strong end to the season and is making a good start to that bid in Beijing. After moments of brilliance, Paolini will be hoping for more consistency in 2026 and the Italian will start putting things into practice in the latter stages of this year.

The next test for Paolini will be the effective net skills and baseline consistency of Marie Bouzkova. It’s been a fine tournament for Bouzkova so far who has clicked into gear over the last few months with consistent wins over good players. The latest set of wins come against Magda Linette and Veronika Kudermetova in back-to-back matches as Bouzkova looks to boost her ranking ahead of next season.

Paolini will look to serve aggressively as she will step inside the baseline to dictate the points. Meanwhile Bouzkova will use the backhand to neutralize Paolini’s baseline power and use variety to mix up the tempo of the rallies. This will be a decent test for Paolini but the Italian should have too much consistent quality for the Czech Republican.

Prediction: Paolini in straight sets.
