Madison Keys lives to fight another day at Wimbledon. The Australian Open champion had to battle for over two hours and 40 minutes in order to defeat Elena Gabriela Ruse in what was an epic match. However, Keys knows that in order to win a Wimbledon title she will need to play better than that with the grass of SW19 not being her best friend in previous years. The question remains whether Keys has the patience to go all the way because Keys certainly has the power and resilience to be a Wimbledon champion.

Next up for Keys is in-form Serb Olga Danilovic who has certainly proven herself to be a threat for the best players in the world. The 24 year-old has had another good season as she has reached the latter stages of WTA tournaments and tested some of the best players in the world regularly. Landing just outside the seeded positions, Danilovic will be determined to justify her reputation as a dangerous floater and will now aim to back up her potential by getting over the finishing line against the world’s best players.

Keys will need to serve aggressively and will look to set up the forehand to finish off rallies quickly. Meanwhile Danilovic will aim to defend her shots well and take the ball early on return. This will be a tough match for Keys but as long as she can improve her level from her first round match then she should edge into the third round albeit in long and testing fashion.

Prediction: Keys in three sets.

It took two days and five sets but Taylor Fritz is into the second round. A five set win over big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard means Fritz survives another day. The American will be hoping there aren’t too many more scares like this for the rest of the way through as the Stuttgart and Eastbourne champion entered as the most in-form player on grass. Now Fritz will be hoping that stays true as another difficult assignment awaits in his bid for a Wimbledon breakthrough.

Speaking of grass court titlists, Fritz’s next opponent has also won a grass court title this year in the form of Gabriel Diallo. The Canadian claimed a landmark title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch to make his grass court breakthrough as he continues to move up the rankings. Diallo has a compact yet powerful game with his explosive serving doing damage on multiple surfaces this season. Now the 23 year-old will hope to bring his talented game to the Grand Slam stage and cause one of the biggest wins of his career.

Fritz will aim to continue his incredible serving as he will use the forehand to keep Diallo moving around the court. Meanwhile Diallo will use his explosive serving to force shorter returns from Fritz so that the Canadian can dictate play more easily. This will be a match between two of the most effective servers on tour with Fritz’s higher amount of quality in all areas expected to expose Diallo’s lack of consistency.

Prediction: Fritz in four sets.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka is on a mission at this year’s Wimbledon. After losing two consecutive Grand Slam finals, Sabalenka would love nothing more than to finally achieve success at the one Grand Slam that she is yet to conquer. After making a positive start, Sabalenka will hope that she can continue to dominate the field as a tough path to glory awaits.

Next up for Sabalenka is Marie Bouzkova who can be a tricky customer on any surface. A powerful game full of variety has seen Bouzkova have past success on grass and is looking to add to her reputation this year. There would be no bigger stage to do that then against the world number one as Bouzkova will use her varied game to force errors from the three-time Grand Slam champion.

Sabalenka will use her first serve to dominate play as the forehand will be the key to success here. Meanwhile Bouzkova will use the backhand to neutralise Sabalenka’s baseline play while mixing the rallies up with the slice. This should be a good test for Sabalenka but the world number one has too much consistent quality for the tricky Bouzkova.

Prediction: Sabalenka in straight sets.
