You wouldn’t ordinarily call a year that has seen Aryna Sabalenka reach the first two Slam finals of the year as ‘unsuccessful’ but her losses to Madison Keys in Australia and Coco Gauff in Paris have cut deep. The Belarusian three-time Slam champion is eyeing up a third consecutive semi-final if she can get past Germany’s Laura Siegemund.

Siegemund downed reigning Australian Open champion Keys in the third round before comfortably easing past lucky loser Solana Sierra, who saw off Katie Boulter in the second round.

Both players have good doubles prowess which means they have more to add than smacking the fluff off the ball, so this is by no means a foregone conclusion for the world No. 1.

Up until now it has been all Sabalenka’s honour and in straight sets to boot, but given how the top seed found herself struggling against Emma Raducanu, and with the British crowd loving to get behind an underdog, Siegemund could take her first set off Sabalenka in three meetings.

Prediction: Sabalenka in three sets.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova ended British hopes in the women’s draw by downing Sonay Kartal in straight sets, but Queen’s Club finalist Amanda Anisimova – who has built up quite a head of steam on the grass.

Pavlyuchenkova has had to come from a set down in a couple of matches, and required tie-breaks to come through her others, so is battle-hardened against a player who has put in a lot of time on the green stuff already this season.

But the young American’s record over the Russian is quite impressive, only once giving up a set in Washington last year.

It remains to be seen if the fatigue will catch up with Anisimova, but she has the edge over this encounter.

Prediction: Anisimova in three sets.

Taylor Fritz finds himself in the quarter-finals for the second time, but over the net will be Karen Khachanov who has the measure of the American’s game. After a couple of tough rounds, Fritz will have had a brief respite, progressing due to the withdrawal pf Jordan Thompson in the fourth round.

Khachanov has been largely under the radar and seems to be enjoying a bit of a resurgence in his game, even if he has been pulled the distance in a couple of his matches.

Fritz certainly has been the more consistent this year, if not over the past couple of years, and with his style of play, you feel that if he is going to halt Khachanov’s winning streak over him, then that time is now.

Prediction: Fritz in five sets.
