A hard-fought win for Jasmine Paolini as the Italian defeated Jelena Ostapenko in three valiant sets. The victory will give the Italian confidence as Ostapenko entered this match in really good form and will give Paolini that spark needed to explode into red-hot form herself. However, that is easier said than done when you’ve had the year that Paolini has had and with Roland Garros and Wimbledon final points to defend that challenge isn’t going to get much easier.

Next up for Paolini is another player in red-hot form in the form of Diana Shnaider. The world number 11 is yet to drop a set in Rome this week and was unlucky not to defeat Iga Swiatek in Madrid last week. Shnaider has a mix of power, depth and variety which can cause opponents problems with her consistency being at a really high level. Now the 13th seed looks to take her game to the next level and that bid will start by reaching a WTA 1000 semi-final.

Paolini will aim to dictate the majority of the points by being aggressive on the forehand side and stepping into the court. Shnaider will aim to be aggressive on return and put Paolini on the back foot. This is a match between two clinical players at the net and between two confident individuals. The match will be decided by fine margins and the crowd may lift Paolini’s game to the next level.

Prediction: Paolini in three sets.

What a clay court season Lorenzo Musetti is having. The Italian has backed up reaching his maiden Masters 1000 final in Monte-Carlo with a semi-final in Madrid and is now into the last 16 in Rome. The consistency from the world number nine has been something to behold as he is now beating opponents that he would normally struggle against on his off day. This rich vain of form looks to continue as Musetti will now be targeting a strong run at Roland Garros this month.

Next up for Musetti is well known clay courter Daniil Medvedev. Okay, let’s not go that far but Medvedev has slowly been improving his form over the last couple of weeks. Now Medvedev will hope he can maintain this resurgent form as he targets a move back into the world’s top ten over the coming months. The concern though is if Medvedev has another gear he can go to and time will tell whether Medvedev has enough quality to sustain this high level tennis in order to compete for big titles.

Musetti will use the backhand to test Medvedev’s mobility on a clay court as he will need to be aggressive on serve. Meanwhile Medvedev will look to extend the rallies as he will use depth to pin the Italian behind the baseline. This should be a high quality contest with both players aiming to play attacking tennis but Musetti’s recent form means that he may get over the line against Medvedev this time around.

Prediction: Musetti in three sets.

Elina Svitolina has her eyes set on another magical Rome run as she continues her good clay court season. The Ukrainian has a habit of elevating her game when it really matters at the big events. Now after overcoming Danielle Collins, Svitolina will be hoping she can replicate her success from past years and claim a third title in the eternal city that is Rome.

A stern test awaits because Peyton Stearns is Svitolina’s opponent in the quarter-finals. The American overcome a difficult challenge against Naomi Osaka to win a last set tiebreak and progress to the last eight. The world number 42 has had a sensational tournament so far having defeated Anna Kalinskaya and Madison Keys as well. Now the American will take her powerful all-court game in a bid to claim another scalp in Italy.

Svitolina will drive the forehand down the line in order to put Stearns in defensive positions. Meanwhile Stearns will look to be aggressive on serve while using depth on return to force shorter balls from the Ukrainian. This will be a competitive match with lots of long exchanges expected but in the end the clay court intelligence of Svitolina should prevail.

Prediction: Svitolina in three sets.
