Day three of the Nitto ATP Finals will start with Roland Garros and US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz as he takes on American Taylor Fritz.
It was a successful opening match win for Alcaraz even if he let a 4-1 lead slip in the opening set. The Spaniard doesn’t have the best record on indoor hard courts or Turin in fact but he is determined to put that right this year. Extra motivation is there for Alcaraz as he looks to finish the year as world number one in a bid to end Jannik Sinner’s title defence. The question is can Alcaraz elevate and adapt his game on indoor hard courts enough to pose a consistent threat to the Italian.
A big task awaits Alcaraz as he faces Fritz in a rematch of the Wimbledon semi-finals and Tokyo final which saw the Spaniard win both meeting. A good opening win for the American who has a short turnaround to his second match having won his first match 24 hours prior. A big serve and an effective backhand makes Fritz such a tough opponent on indoor hard courts with even Sinner struggling during last year’s Nitto ATP Finals final before winning the title. Now, Fritz will aim to capitalise on his confident tennis this season in order to go one step further than last year.
This will be a tough battle for Alcaraz to negotiate and he will need to use good variety in both serve and return if he wants any chance of winning. Meanwhile, Fritz will look to close off rallies at the net as well as using angles in order to force Alcaraz into hitting very tough shots. In the end, Alcaraz should have enough quality to come through a tough encounter and move one step closer towards the semi-finals in Turin.
Prediction: Alcaraz in three sets.

In the other match of the day, Alex De Minaur will face home favourite Lorenzo Musetti in a crucial clash with both players losing their opening match of the tournament.
It was a tough contest for De Minaur who fell away comfortably in the second set of his contest with Alcaraz. The Australian produced a valiant effort in the opening set and will be pleased with his serving in the best moments of the match. Now, De Minaur will aim to be more consistent with his tennis as he still has a good chance of qualifying but will look to be more proactive and aggressive in his remaining two matches of the round robin phase.
That bid will start against Musetti with the Italian having a tough turnaround to his first match from the Athens final. The fatigue showed as he lost in straight sets to Fritz and was unable to produce his best tennis. It’s another tough turnaround to his second match as he has just over 24 hours to prepare for his match with De Minaur but the good news for the Italian is that he has a good head-to-head record against the seventh seed. An aggressive game and good variety means that Musetti can dictate play and will aim to do the same in this crucial clash.
De Minaur will mix up his serving patterns and will use the forehand to dictate the majority of the play. Meanwhile, Musetti will use the backhand to find angles and force De Minaur into uncomfortable positions on the court. This should be a high-quality affair with De Minaur being more consistent with his tactics in order to prevail in an important match for both players.
Prediction: De Minaur in three sets.
