[1] Alexander Zverev
Best Result: Final (2018)
Another disappointing result for Zverev at Indian Wells as the German is under severe pressure and is in desperate need of confidence and results.
Zverev’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)
- R1: BYE | H2H: N/A
- R2: Benjamin Bonzi | H2H: First Meeting
- R3: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard [28] | H2H: First Meeting
- R4: Frances Tiafoe [16] | H2H: Zverev leads 8-1
- QF: Jack Draper [6] | H2H: First Meeting
- SF: Taylor Fritz [3] | H2H: Fritz leads 7-5
- F: Carlos Alcaraz [2] | H2H: Zverev leads 6-5
An early test awaits for Zverev in the form of Benjamin Bonzi before fellow big-server Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard could be his opponent in the third round. In the fourth round either Frances Tiafoe or Indian Wells quarter-finalist Arthur Fils would test Zverev’s confidence while Indian Wells champion Jack Draper would set up a mouth-watering quarter-final. At the moment it’s hard to see where the wins come from for Zverev especially as he is facing opponents that will rush his game. Unless Zverev picks up his game early in the tournament then another early exit will happen for the world number two.
[2] Carlos Alcaraz
Best Result: Champion (2022)
Alcaraz’s title defence came to a halt in the semi-finals in Indian Wells but the Spaniard will now aim to continue his bid for the world number one spot by winning a second title in Miami.
Alcaraz’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)
- R1: BYE | H2H: N/A
- R2: David Goffin | H2H: Tied at 1-1
- R3: Brandon Nakashima [31] | H2H: Alcaraz leads 1-0
- R4: Grigor Dimitrov [14] | H2H: Alcaraz leads 4-2
- QF: Casper Ruud [5] | H2H: Alcaraz leads 4-1
- SF: Novak Djokovic [4] | H2H: Djokovic leads 5-3
- F: Alexander Zverev [1] | H2H: Zverev leads 6-5
It should be a relatively comfortable start for Alcaraz with Brandon Nakashima expected to test the Spaniard’s game early on. A tasty last 16 clash against Karen Khachanov, Nick Kyrgios or Grigor Dimitrov should spark the second seed’s campaign into life. A quarter-final against Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul should prepare Alcaraz for a potential semi-final against Djokovic. The Spaniard will no doubt be the favourite to get to the final on current form but the question is does he have the confidence and consistency to win his second Miami title?

[3] Taylor Fritz
Best Result: Quarter-Final (2023)
Fritz is aiming to improve his poor run in Miami as he is in search for confidence and improvement in performances ahead of the clay court season.
Fritz’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)
- R1: BYE | H2H: N/A
- R2: Lorenzo Sonego | H2H: Fritz leads 4-2
- R3: Denis Shapovalov [27] | H2H: Shapovalov leads 6-4
- R4: Ben Shelton [13] | H2H: Fritz leads 1-0
- QF: Andrey Rublev [8] | H2H: Fritz leads 5-4
- SF: Alexander Zverev [1] | H2H: Fritz leads 7-5
- F: Carlos Alcaraz [2] | H2H: Alcaraz leads 2-0
It’s a tough draw for Fritz with Lorenzo Sonego, Denis Shapovalov and Ben Shelton all capable of pulling off big performances against the American. The quarter-final is likely to be against either Alex De Minaur or Matteo Berrettini in what is a stacked section of the draw. If Fritz wants any chance of walking away from American with some positives than he will need to play aggressive and proactive tennis in what is a very tough and dangerous section of the draw.
[4] Novak Djokovic
Best Result: Champion (2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016)
Six-time champion Djokovic returns to Miami for the first time since 2019 and is in desperate search of form heading into the clay court season.
Djokovic’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)
- R1: BYE | H2H: N/A
- R2: Hamad Medjedovic | H2H: First Meeting
- R3: Alex Michelsen [32] | H2H: Djokovic leads 1-0
- R4: Lorenzo Musetti [15] | H2H: Djokovic leads 7-1
- QF: Daniil Medvedev [7] | H2H: Djokovic leads 10-5
- SF: Carlos Alcaraz [2] | H2H: Djokovic leads 5-3
- F: Alexander Zverev [1] | H2H: Djokovic leads 8-5
An interesting opening match could await for Djokovic as he could face apprentice Hamad Medjedovic. Then an array of big hitters could await with Alex Michelsen being the potential obstacle in the third round while Lorenzo Musetti or Felix Auger-Aliassime will provide Djokovic with a dangerous test in the last 16. Ultimately it’s tough to have any confidence that Djokovic will get past anyone with any great authority but you can never count out the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Miami begins on the 19th of March and concludes on the 30th of March.
