It’s been a successful tournament for Iga Swiatek who is looking to defend her Madrid title this week. The tournament hasn’t been without challenges though as he fourth round contest against Diana Shnaider proved with Swiatek still yet to find that extra gear. However, Swiatek will be hoping that these tough moments can boost her form and confidence as champions simply know when to step up their level and how to win big events. That is what Swiatek will need to do as she has her Rome and Roland Garros title defences coming up.

Next for Swiatek is an Australian Open rematch with Madison Keys as the American won their thrilling semi-final in January. The fifth seed has continued her sensational form recently and is now into the quarter-finals after demolishing Donna Vekic. Although hard courts may seem Keys’ most successful surface, it’s clay that Keys has had some really successful results as she has time to pick her spots and outpower her opponents. Now the Australian Open champion will aim to achieve a massive result on the road to Roland Garros.

Swiatek will need to be aggressive on serve as she will use the forehand to open up the angles and dictate the play. Keys will aim to be aggressive on the backhand as she will need to be consistent on serve. This should be an entertaining contest with Swiatek entering this match as slight favourite. However if Keys zones in her game in the right moments then it could be a long afternoon for the Pole.

Prediction: Swiatek in three sets.

It has been a poor last couple of months by Coco Gauff’s standards but the American is back into the quarter-finals of a big tournament. The American dispatched her demons from Miami to defeat Belinda Bencic as she seems to be playing her way into form. However, the former Roland Garros finalist still has a lot of work to do if she wants to be a Grand Slam contender and a semi-final in Madrid would be a very good place to start if she wants to compete with those above her in the rankings.

In order for Gauff to do that she will have to get past newly turned 18 year-old Mirra Andreeva who has enjoyed an incredible season so far. Andreeva won back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells last month and has been looking to build on it since then. The seventh seed was a Roland Garros semi-finalist last year and knows how to play on the clay as she will now aim to seal her potential by winning a maiden Grand Slam title this year.

Gauff will look to serve aggressively as she aims to find the forehand to open up space on the court. Meanwhile Andreeva will use variety to mix up the pace of the rallies aiming to force errors from Gauff’s game. The conditions suit Gauff but if there are any dips in form from Gauff then Andreeva will capitalise.

Prediction: Gauff in three sets.

After disappointment in the Stuttgart final, world number one Aryna Sabalenka has bounced back well in Madrid. Despite some tough moments the top seed is into the quarter-finals displaying a mixture of quality, intelligence and grit. Now Sabalenka will aim to overcome last year’s final heartbreak and win a third Madrid title this year as she will believe that this year is the year she can claim Roland Garros glory.

A tough test awaits Sabalenka in the last eight in the form of Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk. Kostyuk has had some tough three set contests this week but seems to be stepping up her level of play when it matters as she dismantled Anastasia Potapova to reach the last eight. A mixture of power, precision and finesse sees Kostyuk’s game match up perfectly on clay and will look to fulfil her potential by being a dangerous threat throughout this clay court season by scoring the best win of her season so far.

Sabalenka will aim to be aggressive on serve, using the forehand to be authoritative as she nullifies the attack of Kostyuk. Meanwhile Kostyuk will aim to be aggressive on return, using variety to draw the world number one away from the baseline. The Ukrainian is expected to give Sabalenka a tough test especially given how inconsistent the world number one has been within matches. However, Sabalenka will use her champion’s qualities to prevail in a tight three set contest.

Prediction: Sabalenka in three sets.

Elina Svitolina has continued her form from her title win in Rouen as she is into the quarter-finals in Madrid. The Ukrainian is a threat on the clay with a mixture of aggressive play and clean movement making her a nightmare to face. However, when it comes to the crucial stages of big tournaments Svitolina can often buckle when the pressure is at its most severe. Now Svitolina will aim to rise to the pressure as she bids for a deep run at Roland Garros next month.

An unexpected opponent awaits Svitolina in the last eight in the form of Moyuka Uchijima. The Japanese talent has scored back-to-back wins over Jessica Pegula and Ekaterina Alexandrova in order to reach the last eight playing some clinical tennis. The world number 56 will now be hoping she can keep this run going as she bids to enter the world’s top 50 in what has been a run that has come from nowhere.

Svitolina will need to be aggressive on serve while using the forehand to dictate the baseline exchanges. Meanwhile Uchijima will use the backhand to counter-attack the Ukrainian’s play as she will aim to capitalise on any loose second serves. Although Uchijima has had a great run, she hasn’t got the firepower to match Svitolina mix of precision and efficiency.

Prediction: Svitolina in three sets.
