MADRID, SPAIN – Jack Draper will make his top five debut after he defeated Matteo Arnaldi to set a semi-final clash with Lorenzo Musetti in Madrid.

Jack Draper is into the semi-finals in Madrid for the first time in his career after cruising past Matteo Arnaldi. The victory also means that the Brit will overtake Novak Djokovic in the rankings, making his top five debut on Monday. Just like the rest of the week, it was a clinical start from Draper who converted two of his opening three break points to take a double break lead at 3-0.
Precise and powerful tennis was produced by Draper against Arnaldi, who struggled to get settled into the contest. Only four points were lost in serve with Draper continuing to stamp his authority on the match. On his third break point, Draper secured a third break of the set before holding to love to seal a 25 minute opening set.
A response was needed from Arnaldi to make this a competitive match and the Italian showed the type of tennis that defeated Djokovic and Frances Tiafoe earlier in the tournament. After a tight opening hold of serve, Arnaldi freed up on return and tested the Draper serve but to no reward. The surge from Arnaldi didn’t last two long though with Draper creating break point in the third game.
There was no break then but after securing a love hold, Draper continued to let loose on the forehand to earn the break in the fifth game at 3-2. There was more pressure later on in the set but Arnaldi did well to save two break points in the seventh game. Despite more proactive tennis from the Italian, Arnaldi failed to create a single break point in the contest with Draper proving too strong.
A composed hold of serve saw Draper unlock his rankings milestone as well as reaching the semi-finals in Madrid for the first time.

Draper will now face Monte-Carlo finalist Lorenzo Musetti for a spot in his second Masters 1000 final.

Playing Styles and Prediction
Despite having a fairly poor start to the season, Musetti has come alive over the clay court swing. The Italian reached his maiden Masters 1000 final in Monte-Carlo after beating some top players and has now backed that up with a run to the semi-finals. The Italian is closing in on the world’s top ten and will feel this is his best chance to win a Masters 1000 title.
Draper aims to be aggressive on serve as the Brit looks to dictate the play with the backhand, using angles to expose Musetti’s court positioning. Meanwhile Musetti will use the backhand to accelerate the tempo of the rally and will need to serve aggressively in order to neutralise Draper’s returning efficiency. This will be a fantastic contest between two in-form players with the head-to-head record suggesting that this is a bad match-up for the Italian.
Prediction: Draper in three sets.
