INDIAN WELLS, USA – Jack Draper downed Joao Fonseca in a high-quality contest to reach the third round at Indian Wells where he faces Jenson Brooksby.

In a highly anticipated match-up, Jack Draper produced an impressive match to defeat Joao Fonseca and reach the third round at Indian Wells. The match matched the hype expected as both players played aggressive tennis from the start of the match with Fonseca creating half-chances to break in the second game.
However, Draper produced some impressive patterns of play on serve with the British number one holding serve before securing the first break of the match in the following game for a 2-1 lead. If Draper thought that the early break would fend off the talented Brazilian then he would be sorely mistaken as Fonseca responded emphatically by breaking in the following game thanks to a double fault from Draper.
A mixture of power, variety and patience was the key for Fonseca to keep up with Draper’s high level of play and the Brazilian played some impressive tennis to catch Draper off-guard. Both players were firing on the forehand side from the baseline as the tennis balls were the real losers of this match with neither player backing down. Although Draper was being severely tested on serve, there was no real threat on the important points from Fonseca as the set was reaching its tense conclusion.
That would be the big difference between the two players as Draper knew when to raise his game and that’s exactly what he did as he broke in the ninth game to obtain a 5-4 lead. Still, Fonseca’s confidence wasn’t dying anytime soon as the Brazilian once again threatened to break while Draper was serving for the set. However, the British number one held his nerve to seal the opening set on his second set point saving three break points in the process.
The momentum was with Draper and the British number one ran with it as he dominated the second set with Fonseca offering very little resistance in the second set. A mixture of dominant power and touch with the drop shot allowed him to dominate a fatigued Fonseca as he powered past the Brazilian’s defence.
Despite Fonseca creating two break points at the end of the match, Draper won all six games of the second set to secure a place in the third round.

Draper will now aim to repeat his success of two years ago and reach the fourth round of Indian Wells when he takes on Jenson Brooksby.

Playing Styles and Prediction
Since his comeback at the Australian Open, Brooksby hasn’t been in the best form having only won three matches on tour. However, his latest win was a very big one as he knocked out the in-form Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the third round. Now the American will look to capitalise on his momentum and aim for a big jump up the rankings.
Draper will hope to maintain a high first serve percentage as he looks to dictate the tempo of the majority rallies. Meanwhile Brooksby will need to be aggressive on return as he looks to neutralise the Brit’s efficiency on serve. This will be a good test of Draper’s consistency but the British one should extend his red-hot form as he bids for a deep run in California.
