After losing February’s tie to Japan, Great Britain are down to World Group I and prepare to face an under-strength Poland side in Gdynia.

It was a painful loss for the British team away in Japan as the British team lost 3-2 in a painful defeat.

Speaking about the experience Jacob Fearnley admitted it was a good experience playing his first tie in February.

“Obviously I was very nervous coming into my first tie, but I was super excited. I was glad to get my first win and that gave me a lot of confidence,” Fearnley told the LTA website.

“Playing in an away tie and then this tie also being away, it’s definitely given me a lot of confidence and I’m just really excited and grateful to be picked again. To be asked to play again is really special.”

After spending so long in the World Group, Leon Smith’s men will now have to earn their way back into the top tier of world team tennis.

The British team will now face Poland in what is one of 13 ties with the 13 winners heading to the qualifiers next February while the 13 losers will play World Group I Play-Offs.

Speaking about the opposition Fearnley admits he doesn’t know too much about the opposition but in Davis Cup that can also be a dangerous thing.

“I don’t know too much about their (Poland’s) squad, which can be a challenge in itself,” Fearnley admitted to the LTA website.

“We have a higher ranked team but in Davis Cup I don’t think that means too much, especially in an away tie. I think the way we are going to pull through is by competing, playing our games and supporting each other as a team.”

There will be no Kamil Majchrzak for Poland who had to withdraw due to an injury he suffered at the US Open.

Also missing is Hubert Hurkacz who continues to prioritise his singles over the Davis Cup team.

It means that their singles line-up contains players outside the world’s top 450 in the form of Olaf Pieczkowski, Tomasz Berkieta and Maks Kasnikowski.

Joining former Australian Open champion Jan Zielinski in doubles is Karol Drzewiecki as Poland look to return to the World Group for the first time since 2016.

The British team is a strong one in Poland as they prepare to write the wrongs of February as Cameron Norrie joins Fearnley in Gdynia with Jack Draper out for the season.

Also joining Norrie and Fearnley is Arthur Fery who has been rewarded for his decent last couple of months.

In the doubles the world number one pairing of Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool make their Davis Cup debuts after winning the Wimbledon title.

Speaking about the call-up, Cash admitted that it means a lot after an incredible last few months.

“It means a lot,” Cash said to the LTA website.

“It’s a surreal moment – something I’ve dreamt of my whole life. British doubles is incredibly strong so it’s not something I ever took for granted or thought I’d be able to do, so to get the call from Leon was a dream come true.

“I was in the physio room (when I got the call). As soon as I saw his (Leon’s) name pop up I knew it was going to be either good or bad news so I was prepared for both. Having seen the team now and the full line up I’m really excited to spend some time with those guys, I get on with them all really well so I think we’re going to have a really fun week.”

It has been an exceptional last few months but the British pair suffered a setback as they lost in the opening round of the US Open.

According to Glasspool, it was a moment that humbled them as they are prepared to work harder on their game heading into the rest of the season.

“Losing in the first round of the US Open was a nice bit of humbling and brought us back down to earth,” Glasspool admitted to the LTA website.

“It feels like another year on tour, there are so many ups and downs in doubles, I’ve experienced both. It just feels like we’re having a good year, we’re confident and we’re going to keep pushing.”

The tie will take place on Friday and Saturday with play beginning at 16:00 BST on Friday with play starting on Saturday at 12:00 BST.
