Brit of the Week
Oliver Bonding entered the ITF event in France and was unseeded. The young Brit drew sixth seed and fellow Briton Ben Jones in the first round. The first set was very close, as neither player could get a decisive break. Fittingly, they forced a tiebreak. In the breaker Bonding edged through and took the lead. In the second set, Bonding managed to secure a break of serve and move into the next round in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-4.
The second round saw Bonding against Frenchman Thomas Deschamps. The 17-year-old Brit broke serve in the first set and held on to take the lead. The second set was much closer as Deschamps attempted a fightback. The Frenchman managed to force a tiebreak. In the breaker the Brit edged through to move into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(7).
In the quarter-final the Brit was against wildcard entrant Pierre Faut. The Frenchman stayed toe-to-toe with Bonding in the first set, forcing a tiebreak. The 17-year-old Brit dominated the breaker and took the lead. The second set saw the Brit break serve of Faut and move into the next round 7-6(2), 6-4.
The semi-final saw the young Brit against the top seed and fellow Briton Emile Hudd. The first set saw both fighting hard and a tiebreak ensued. In the breaker, Bonding eased through and took the lead. This seemed to break Hudd, who found the 17-year-old to strong in the second set. Bonding dominated and moved into the final in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-2.
In the final Bonding was against French eighth seed Axel Garcian. The first set saw the Brit break serve early and the seed could not get the break back. The second set saw Garcian start the better, breaking Bonding early and taking a very early lead. However, Bonding fought back, dragging himself back into the set and levelling up the scoreline. Eventually, a tense tiebreak followed. The breaker saw the score go back and forth before Bonding managed to secure the break. The young Brit secured his first ITF World Tour title in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(9).
