After cancelling her retirement before the season started, once again Danielle Collins is here to cause trouble. The American was booed heavily during her second round contest against Destanee Aiava and reacted in the only way she can, by attempting to make the home crowd even more angry with her antics. The tenth seed is controversial, but she won’t mind that as that helps reinstall the fire in her belly as she attempts for more Australian Open success. Now the former finalist will hope to continue her fine form and ensure she causes more chaos in the second week.

Next up for Collins is the in-form Madison Keys who is in red-hot form after winning the Adelaide title just before the Australian Open. The 19th seed’s impressive form almost was forgotten about altogether as she survived a stern second round test against Elena-Gabriela Ruse. That shows the American that nothing is guaranteed when it comes to Grand Slam tennis and that everything is earned when it comes to the big events, so Keys will need to be consistent and on top of her game if she wants to be considered a credible Grand Slam title threat.

Collins will use the forehand to keep Keys guessing and move the 19th seed into uncomfortable positions in the court. Meanwhile Keys will use the forehand to push Collins back and force shorter balls from the tenth seed so she can approach the net. This will be an electric contest between two in-form players but Collins’ consistency should prove too much here.

Prediction: Collins in three sets.

After reaching his first Grand Slam final at the US Open last year, Taylor Fritz has carried the momentum into 2025 with the American only dropping eight games at the Australian Open so far. The fourth seed has more belief than ever before that he can win a Grand Slam and with a big serve and deadly forehand to go with his self-confidence, Fritz will be hoping that his Grand Slam breakthrough is in Melbourne.

A tough obstacle awaits Fritz in the next round in the form of Gael Monfils who is unbeaten so far this season. Age is just a number for the Frenchman who has already won a title in Auckland this season and beat in-form rising star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in five sets to start his Australian Open campaign. Now the 38 year-old will aim to turn back the clock and continue his incredible form, sealing a place in the second week.

Fritz will use the forehand to dictate the rallies from the baseline as he looks for depth to neutralize Monfils’ explosive game. Meanwhile Monfils will use his pace to accelerate the speed of the rallies. The day time conditions favour Monfils but Fritz’s resilience and quality should be too much for the Frenchman.

Prediction: Fritz in four sets.

Emma Navarro certainly hasn’t done things the easy way in Melbourne as the American has had to grind to two three set victories over Peyton Stearns and Xiyu Wang. However the eighth seed is somehow into the third round and looking to continue her Grand Slam from the US Open, where she reached the semi-finals. The American knows how to grind down opponents with her incredible defence and will be hoping she can frustrate more opponents as the tournament goes on.

Former Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur awaits for Navarro next as the Tunisian overcame breathing difficulties to reach the last 32. Having dealt with injuries over the past year, Jabeur entered this season with freedom to her game as she knows the end of her career is sooner rather than later. A mixture of slice and power still makes Jabeur a threat at Grand Slams and she will hope that 2025 is her year to finally win a Grand Slam title.

Navarro will use her defensive skills to create depth as she will use the backhand to accelerate the pace of the rallies. Meanwhile Jabeur will use the slice to make sure that Navarro commits errors from the baseline. This should be an entertaining match with lots of variety expected but Navarro’s improved defensive skillset should give her a slight edge.

Prediction: Navarro in three sets.
