Rafael Nadal [1] def. Cameron Norrie 6-1, 6-4
Rafael Nadal advanced to his first semi-final of the season after a much needed victory over Cameron Norrie, who was searching for his second. The Spaniard dominated from start to finish as he registered his second win over the 25-year-old in 2021.
After being pushed the distance in both matches this week, the top seed started the match like a man on a mission. Nadal was in control of virtually every point as he highlighted the colossal gap in the rankings between the two. The 11-time champion wrapped up the first set without needing to produce anything close to his best tennis.
Norrie raised his level in the second and made the set a lot tighter – although he never looked likely to win it. Nadal was superior on return, winning 45% of points on the Brit’s first serve. The Spaniard proved too hot to handle as he won his 19th straight match against fellow lefties on clay.
The World No. 58 can look back at this week with a tonne of pride. Norrie secured three strong wins under his belt over the likes of Karen Khachanov and David Goffin – although the Belgian did retire down a set. The Brit will climb eight spots in the rankings and re-enter the Top 50 on Monday.
Norrie is next in action in Estoril next week.
