Emma Raducanu reached a third straight quarter-final in Washington as she down Naomi Osaka in straight sets. The first set was highly competitive with two powerful ball-strikers matched well against each other.

Raducanu grabbed the only break of the first set to establish the lead. She kept that momentum breaking at the start of the second set and would break once more for a 4-1 lead. Osaka mounted her defence to saving a match-point on her serve, but it was not enough to hold Raducanu off as she advanced.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Raducanu might have had a slower start to the year but seems to have hit a purple patch in form and maybe even with some stability in her coaching after bringing Mark Petchey on board. Sakkari has struggled for form and coming into this tournament, she had no main draw back-to-back wins since Madrid and even had to drop to the qualifying rounds for Rome.

It is a far cry from the Greek’s previous debut in Washington, where she made the final. There is something about her game though that Raducanu has had the measure of in all their previous meetings, including on the Brit’s way to the US Open title.

Prediction: Raducanu in three sets.
