Brit of the Week

Francesca Jones entered the ITF event in Brazil and was the second seed. The Brit faced unseeded Italian Miriana Tona in the first round. The seed dominated the match from the outset. Jones barely put a foot wrong during the whole match. The Brit was soon in the next round in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

In the second round Jones was against Ukrainian Valeriya Strakhova. The first set saw Strakhova stay close to the Brit, before Jones broke serve and took the lead. The second set saw the seed get off to a really great start. The Ukrainian struggled to hold serve and the Brit took full advantage, moving into the next round in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

The quarter-final saw Jones against fifth seed Laura Pigossi. The Brazilian found the Brit too strong. Pigossi was dominated by Jones in the first set and was unable to get any games on the board. The second set saw the Brit still dominate, but Pigossi managed to get a couple of games on board. Jones moved into the next round 6-0, 6-2.

In the semi-final Jones was against third seed Argentine Julia Riera. The Brit and the third seed stayed close in the first set, with Riera trying to break Jones. However, it was the second seed who secured the break and took the lead. The second set was a repeat of the first, with Jones breaking to move into the next round 6-4, 6-4.

The final saw Jones against the top seed Leolia Jeanjean. The Frenchwoman started quickly and dominated the Brit to take the first set. The second set saw Jones re-group and fight back. The Brit broke serve to level the match. The final set saw Jones dominate Jeanjean and lift the trophy 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
