Johanna Konta v Gabriela Dabrowski } H2H: Konta leads 2-0 (Tour, ITF)
The British No. 1 Johanna Konta has had a long stint after a first round exit at the US open, and to be honest a US season of mixed fortunes. Reaching a third quarter-final of the year in San Jose looked positive, along with another couple of wins in Montreal but since then, there have been no back to back wins for the Brit.
While Gabriela Dabrowski’s doubles credentials cannot be faulted, winning titles this year in Sydney, Doha and Eastbourne, as well as reaching the semi=finals of Wimbledon, her singles record this year is not nearly as glittery. Until Quebec City last week, the Canadian had not won any back to back matches and had actually snapped a seven-match losing streak on home turf.
Coming through a couple of rounds of qualifying will have also given her a bit of encouragement, and surely at the back of her mind she will fancy her chances of giving Konta a little pause for thought – at her worst moments last year, the Brit seemed to have lost her ability to figure out her opponents on the fly.
Dabrowski has never been higher than World No. 164 (back in 2014), but her doubles prowess is likely to cause Konta a few issues. For example, while there has been a lot of improvement from Konta at the net, she can be exposed there, and we can expect the Canadian to be able to latch on to Konta’s serves.
That being said, when the Brit’s serving game is on, everything falls into place. She seems well prepared, and of course is the favourite to pick up a win.
Prediction: Konta in straight sets.
Konta & Dabrowski are scheduled in the Main arena, not before 2pm (6am BST).
