Pauline Parmentier [8] def. Heather Watson 5-7 6-3 7-6(5)

Heather Watson narrowly missed out on a spot in her first final of the season, after being finally edged in a tight three setter against the No. 8 seed Pauline Parmentier. Watson went down an early break at the start of the first set but went toe-to-toe with the Frenchwoman putting up sterling resistance saving three set points.

This upswing saw her get the break back in the next game on her fifth try and before finally grabbing the first set with two break points of her own. However, Parmentier started the second set the brighter with two immediate breaks at the start of the second set, and although Watson grabbed one of the breaks back, Parmentier would go on to break Watson for a third time to level the match.

The third set was their most competitive, taking nine games before Watson brought up the first break point chance, and another two in the next game. Watson had the upper hand with a mini-break late in the tie-break, before losing her own serve twice, with Parmentier converting her single match point for the win, coming back from a set down to victory for the sixth time this year.

Watsons’ best run since the start of the year sees her back in the Top 100 based on the Live Tennis Rankings and should be confirmed when the new rankings come out on Monday. She will also leap-frog Katie Boulter to reclaim the British No. 2 spot.
