Varvara Lepchenko [7] def Elena Baltacha 6-2, 6-0
Britain’s Elena Baltacha’s comeback was halted at the hands of seventh seed, Varvara Lepchenko, at the WTA Premier Brussels Open, her first WTA event since the London 2012 Olympics.
The American got off to a quick start, breaking Baltacha in the first game, but was kept to a single break margin by the first change of ends.
A decisive break to lead 5-2 put Lepchenko in the driving seat, holding her next game to love and sealing the first set 6-2.
The second set started just as ominously with Baltacha broken twice, and rapidly got away from her as Lepchenko turned the screw, winning 10 games on the trot to advance to the quarter-finals.
