Heather Watson def Galina Voskoboeva 7-5 5-7 7-6(4)
British No. 1, Heather Watson, toiled for almost three and a half hours to advance to the second round, at the US National Indoor Championships, Memphis.
Watson had to fight back from 2-5 down in the first set, winning 5 games on the trot to take the first set 7-5, from Kazakhstan’s Galina Voskoboeva.
The second set was equally hard fought, and Voskoboeva dug in to take the second set 7-5.
Watson raced ahead to a 5-1 lead in the deciding set, but Voskoboeva broke the British number one as she was serving for the match, twice.
Voskoboeva edged ahead for the first time in the set, putting pressure on Watson’s serve to stay in the match, and force a final set tie-breaker.
The pair swapped mini-breaks until Watson was able to edge ahead with a lead of three match points, and took the match 7-4(4).
