Karolina Pliskova [7] def. Petra Kvitova [4] 6-3 6-4

It was landmarks galore for Karolina Pliskova as she scored her first tour level win over the Czech No. 1 Petra Kvitova, as well as securing her spot in the WTA Finals semi-final for the second straight year.
From the outset, Pliskova looked to be the more driven. She was swiftly up a double break on her compatriot, before Kvitova at least earned a break of her own to get on the board. Pliskova a did her best to try and open up that double break cushion again but the single advantage was enough to give Plsikova a foothold into the semi-finals.
Kvitova roared out of the blocks in the second set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before a flurry of breaks set a few nerves on edge. Pliskova sought dome reassurance from coach Rennae Stubbs that this set was within her grasp before breaking in the penultimate game before closing out the match and famous win over her Fed Cup team mate.
It is no secret that the pair are not the closes of friends, so Pliskova was honest enough to admit that this win, coupled with reaching the semi-finals for the second straight year.
“I was pretty positive even after the match what I lost against Svitolina. I think my game is just completely fine. There is no reason to panic or there is no reason to just feel bad about something. I think my shots are both pretty solid, so I can play anywhere. I think I didn’t felt this way kind of in off-season, so I feel just pretty relaxed. My serve is fine, so positive.
“It mean a lot, and for sure, to get it to go to semi-finals after beating her, it’s just special. But obviously after the first set, I didn’t know that she cannot make the semis anymore, but it was more about me.”
“I just know like, look, I have set, I know I’m pretty good playing three-setters this year, so I just believed I can win this match by having the first set done. I felt pretty confident actually out there. Yeah, pretty happy about my performance.”
The semi-finals will be played on Saturday.
