Katie Swan [WC] v Mihaela Buzarnescu [29] | First Meeting
After stunning Irina Camelia Begu, Katie Swan will try and oust another player – this time the No. 29 seed Mihaela Buzarnescu in the second round of Wimbledon.
Swan was the only Brit to go through on the first Monday of Wimbledon as she took on Begu. While the Romanian had some grass time in Eastbourne in the doubles, she did barely anything in terms of singles and it showed as Swan took her chances and broke the far more experienced tour player twice in the first set, and again in the second.
She admitted to being nervous though, and hopefully with a win on her side, she will feel like she has the bit between her teeth a little more.
She will play Buzarnescu who has a lifetime of experiences on the tour, not all of them good, having left the tour in after shoulder and knee injuries resulted in two surgeries. She went back to college and got a doctorate before returning to the tour in December 2016.
She reached the emotional final in Prague where she was beaten by Petra Kvitova and had a solid run on the grass in Birmingham. Experience ought to mean that the Romanian will have too much for her, but time and again we see that the more experienced players coming up against an unknown can come unstuck.
It is easy to underestimate Swan who looks slight but carries enough punch to hold her own with more established players. And with the crowd behind her, she may well give the No. 29 seed a little pause for thought.
Prediction: Buzarnescu in three sets.
