[1] Simona Halep

Halep had a pretty good amount of momentum in the early part of the year, reaching the quarter-final in Adelaide, semi-final of the Australian Open and won the title in Dubai before lockdown hit.

Still unsure of her participation at the US Open, this could be a fist solid step in getting her clay legs ahead of Roland Garros.

Halep’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Polona Hercog | H2H: Halep leads 2-1
  • R2: Patricia Maria Tig | First Meeting
  • QF: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova [6] | H2H: Halep leads 8-0
  • SF: Dayana Yastremska [4] | First Meeting
  • F: Petra Martic [2] | H2H: Halep leads 2-1

Martic’s restart went well, with the top seed making it to the semi-final of Palermo, having not played any kind of competition since a first-round exit in Doha.

She ought to feel comfortable of at least more of the same this week.

Martic’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Varvera Gracheva | First Meeting
  • R2: Kristyna Pliskova | H2H: Martic leads 1-0
  • QF: Ekaterina Alexandrova [5] | First Meeting
  • SF: Elise Mertens [3] | H2H: Mertens leads 2-0
  • F: Simona Halep [1] | H2H: Halep leads 2-1

Mertens will be hoping from a little more from her comeback after being bounced out in the first round of Palermo, albeit not having played since Doha.

Her draw looks favourable enough until she gets to the final, so hopefully can pick up a little confidence and momentum.

Mertens’ Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Jasmine Paolini | H2H: Mertens leads 1-0
  • R2: Camila Giorgi | H2H: Mertens leads 1-0
  • QF: Veronika Kudermetova [8] | H2H: Mertens leads 1-0
  • SF: Petra Martic [2] | H2H: Mertens leads 2-0
  • F: Simona Halep [1] | H2H Halep leads 3-1

[4] Dayana Yastremska

Having started her return on Palermo and losing a tight thriller in the quarter-final to Camila Giorgi, Yastremska has a pretty decent chance on paper to get at least that far if not further.

Yastremska’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Irina-Camelia Begu | First Meeting
  • R2: Fiona Ferro | H2H: Yastremska leads 1-0
  • QF: Barbora Strycova [7] | First Meeting
  • SF: Simona Halep [1] | H2H: First Meeting
  • F: Petra Martic [2] | H2H: First Meeting
