The Top Seeds

[2] Caroline Garcia

Garcia has kept up a steady year, especially after impressing at the season ending finale in 2017. She has been pretty consistent over the year, but maybe expected more in Cincinnati after her run to the Montreal quarter-final.

This draw could open up well for the Frenchwoman – she has three players in a row who went deep in Cincinnati and could well be quite fatigued.

Garcia’s Path to the Final (Seeding/Ranking)

  • R1: BYE
  • R2: Kristina Mladenovic
  • QF: Kiki Bertens [7]
  • SF: Petra Kvitova [3]
  • F: Simona Halep [1]

[3] Petra Kvitova

It was a decidedly weary Kvitova who met with the press after losing her semi-final to the eventual champion Kiki Bertens, but she enjoys being in New Haven as part of her warm up before the US Open.

She is a former winner here, but last year was out in the opening round, so she ought to at least pick up a few points this time around. However as she said in press after exiting in the semi-final – a match-up was Agnieszka Radwanska in her first round was too exhausting to think about!

Kvitova’s Path to the Final (Seeding/Ranking)

  • R1: Agnieszka Radwanska
  • R2: Maria Sakkari
  • QF: Barbora Strycova [8]
  • SF: Caroline Garcia [2]
  • F: Simona Halep [1]

[4/WC] Karolina Pliskova

The Czech has been through a few coaching changes and is now back with Rennae Stubbs but has been on a bit of a roller-coaster, with a pretty lacklustre summer hard-court season at the moment.

Pliskova’s Path to the Final (Seeding/Ranking)

  • R1: Ekaterina Makarova
  • R2: Magdalena Rybarikova
  • QF: Julia Goerges [5]
  • SF: Simona Halep [1]
  • F: Caroline Garcia [2]

The Connecticut Open takes place between 19-25 August
