[1] Ashleigh Barty

It was not the best start to the season for Barty, with an opening round loss in the season opener in Brisbane. Barty though is nothing if not chirpily resilient and will go again leading the field in the inaugural Adelaide tournament. It all looks like smooth sailing on paper until the final, if she can get a run going.

Barty’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: BYE
  • R2: Anett Kontaveit | Barty leads H2H 2-1
  • QF: Marketa Vondrousova [8] | Barty leads H2H 3-0
  • SF: Belinda Bencic [4/WC] | Barty leads H2H 1-0
  • F: Simona Halep [2] | Halep leads H2H 3-1

[2] Simona Halep

Halep rejoins the tour having closed out 2019 with a second Grand Slam title, and a chance to get some match practice ahead of the start of the Australian Open. On paper she has a decent enough looking draw, but we saw how rusty Barty was in her opener and she has some tricky opponents on the way to the final.

Halep’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: BYE
  • R2: Yulia Putintseva [Q] | First Meeting
  • QF: Aryna Sabalenka [6/WC] | Halep leads H2H 2-0
  • SF: Kiki Bertens [5] | H2H tied 3-3
  • F: Ashleigh Barty [1] | Halep leads H2H 3-1

[3] Petra Kvitova

[4] Belinda Bencic

Bencic will look to make up for a faltering start to the season with her opening exit in Shenzhen, but her draw is by no means straight forward. Her first couple of potentials opponents already have some matches in their legs so any wins here would be a bonus.

Bencic’s Path to the Final (Ranking/Seeding)

  • R1: Daria Kasatkina | Kasatkina leads H2H 2-1
  • R2: Julia Goerges | H2H tied at 2-2
  • QF: Sofia Kenin [7] | Kenin leads H2H 1-0
  • SF: Ashleigh Barty [1] | Barty leads H2H 1-0
  • F: Karolina Pliskova [2] | H2H tied at 2-2
