Heather Watson v Kateryna Bondarenko | Bondarenko leads H2H 2-1
One of two Brits in the Tianjin draw, Heather Watson takes on the returning Kateryna Bondarenko, after the birth of her second child. Watson has been searching for some consistent form and has dropped down a couple of times to lower tier events to put together some wins and confidence.
In the lead-up to the US Open, she won the Vancouver ITF event, and has been in qualifying in Wuhan and Beijing. Although the experiences Bondarenko has had the measure of Watson twice, it was honours to Watson the last time they met in Nurnberg last year, and while the results may not have always been there this year for Watson, she comes into this a lot more match-sharp than the Ukrainian who made her return to the tour in Tashkent.
Watson has a complete game but is very much a confidence player. When the confidence is not there though, the matches can tend to run away from her very quickly. Bondarenko has been as high as No. 29 in the world but lost in Tashkent with just four games on the board, so the chance is there for Watson to impose herself early on.
On paper she ought to be able to put this match to be in straight sets, but it is just as likely we could be in for a bit of a rollercoaster – but for Bondarenko, a three setter could be just a step too far at this stage.
Prediction: Watson in three sets.
