Sonay Kartal had to battle her way into the second round on her Rome debut, having to come from a set behind Australia’s Kimberly Birrell. Having continued her breakout year n 2024 with a surprise run to the fourth round at Indian Wells, she is breaking new ground on the dirt, with wins at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers.

Czech Linda Noskova has plenty of experience but has struggled a bit for form after a successful Middle-East swing, and came unstuck against Iga Swiatek in Madrid. Noskova has only ever won a single round in Rome – so this is new territory for both players.

Kartal is the underdog here, but in the past, she has carried the element of surprise against far more experienced players.

Prediction: Noskova in three sets.

Emma Raducanu had a battle on her hands as well in her opener against Australia’s Maya Joint. But scored her first win in Rome. Next up is Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova. The pair have already met twice this season with Raducanu taking the honours at the Australian Open, but losing out in Doha.

Alexandrova has put in the time on the clay courts this year with runs to the semi-finals in Charleston and Stuttgart and reaching the round of 16 in Madrid. Raducanu is a little shy of wins on the dirt not just this season but in general – and will find it tough going.

Prediction: Alexandrova in straight sets.
