Making the most of her time out in Australia, Fran Jones is into the main draw of the WTA Phillip Island Trophy after cruising past Monica Niculescu in the only qualifying round. Having already had the measure of the Romanian in Australian Open qualifying, it was a repeat performance, and a comfortable win that hopefully restores a little confidence in Jones’ game after a couple of R1 losses in the Melbourne Summer Series.

Jones has already learned a lot from her time in Australia as the WTA provide a tournament for those who have gone out early. After her loss to Shelby Rogers in the first round, she said:

“I think for me the main thing is that one error can really change momentum at this level, and that’s something I need to get used to and definitely will be aware of next time I find myself at this sort of tournament.

“I think overall I have proved that I can compete at this level, and I think now it’s about accumulating as many matches as possible over the next 12 months against players such as Shelby or even of a higher level.”

She will be up against Zheng Saisai who moves very well around the court, hitting her forehand with quite a bit of topspin, and her backhands nice ant flat. She will run around and try to make Jones play the extra ball, so the Brit will want to dominate with her forehand and perhaps target Zheng’s weaker serve.

This could be a decent match up for the Brit.

Prediction: Jones in three sets.
