Heather Watson v Viktorija Golubic H2H: Watson leads 1-0

Despite struggling with a tweaked hamstring, Heather Watson displayed a lot of fight to come back from a break down at the start of her match against Katie Volynets to book her spot in the second round.

Whereas some would have hoped to see a Battle of the Brits between Watson and the British No. 1 Emma Raducanu, but a freak injury saw her retire early into her game with Viktorija Golubic.

Golubic and Watson both have a lot of variety to throw into the mix, and Golubic has that lovely single-handed backhand, but neither of them have had the best of years. If Watson is fit, she can take comfort from the fact that her head-to-head lead comes on the grass last year.

Prediction: Watson in three sets.

It was a solid win for Harriet Dart over former champion Donna Vekic, but her match-up with Camila Giorgi will be a tougher prospect. Both have developed a more aggressive game to make up for the fact they might not have the height on their side as other players do, and Giorgi has proved herself to be strong on the grass.

Dart fought well when she found herself down an early break to the more experienced Vekic, and she will need to keep hold of that belief as Giorgi will look to play a lot of first strike tennis.

Prediction: Giorgi in three sets.

Jodie Burrage played a gutsy first round, having to come from a break behind early on to book her second-round encounter with last year’s finalist. Zhang Shuai found herself pushed hard in her opening match and again boasts a lot more experience than Burrage, but the Brit has come off semi-final success albeit at the ITF level event in Surbiton.

At a push, Burrage could spring the surprise here.

Prediction: Burrage in three sets.
