This is shaping up to be a battle of the pint-size aggressors. Neither Camila Giorgi or Sonay Kartal have height on their side and have developed an aggressive game to combat that. Giorgi in particular looks to exploit a serve-forehand combination and is a risk-taker, looking to send up chalk-dust as she paints the lines.

Kartal by her own admission likes to use her own forehand to try and dominate as much as we can – so we should be playing for the little yellow fluffies. Of course, Giorgi comes in with bags of experience and has proved to have adapted her game well to the grass, having eve reached the quarter-final of Wimbledon in 2018.

But she has not had an outing on the grass yet, while Kartal has had a couple of matches under her belt in Surbiton last week, but it is still a touch start for the Brit.

Prediction: Giorgi in straight sets.

Katie Boulter has come out of the end of another bout of injury absences from the sport, but just in time for the grass court season. And with two qualifying rounds already under her belt, she will be feeling more and more comfortable on the surface.

She is a two-tie quarter-finalist at Nottingham and has already had the measure of Tatjana Maria this year in the ITF event at Grenoble, where Boulter went on to win the title. Maria took a sideways step of going from clay to grass to clay to play in a Bundesliga match and might find the chopping and changing a challenge.

Prediction: Boulter in three sets.

Eden Silva returns to the Nottingham main draw where she came through qualifying last year but lost in the first round. She will face Rebecca Marino. The Canadian comes straight from the French Open and has a less than handy win/loss record on grass, so Silva could well be in with a chance if she can hang with the more experienced Marino.

Prediction: Silva in three sets.

She might not be a well-known name in amongst the pack of British players we see in the grass court season, but Yuriko ‘Lily’ Miyazaki has been part f the British tennis scene for a while, as a regular competitor in British competitions since she was 11, playing on the British Tour and the UK Pro League for the past couple of years.

She was confirmed as a GB player by the ITF in March 2022 and will be getting much more well-known to the grass-court watching public. Magdalena Frech also comes straight from the clay while Miyazaki has been able to get a little grass under her feet.

Prediction: Frech in three sets.
