Johanna Konta def. Zhang Shuai 4-6 5-2 RET

Opening rust looked evident in the opening set for Johanna Konta but it looked like she was settling into her stride when Zhang Shuai was struggling with a left leg injury that eventually forced her to retire as Konta led in the second set. She will now face the No. 3 seed Elina Svitolina.

Given how little Konta has played, she is not that far behind Svitolina, but of course the Ukrainian is far more match-fit and comes back bolstered by a bronze medal winning finale at the Tokyo Olympics.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Both play aggressively and while Konta maybe just a little sharper with her first serve percentages, you could argue that Svitolina is a more complete and consistent player. Neither are particularly great at the net so expect to see this match as heavy hitting from the back of the court, and if Konta’s serve is firing she is in with a good chance of at least getting a set off Svitolina – but lacking the match-fitness, it is a tall ask to see her get the win.

Prediction: Svitolina in three sets.
