MONTERREY, MEXICO – It is a quick turnaround for Acapulco and former Monterrey champion Heather Watson as she faces doubles pal Tatjana Maria in her opener.

Now newly back in the Top 50, and with very few points to defend between now and Roland Garros, Heather Watson’s resurgence is giving British Tennis something to cheer while we wait for Johanna Konta to return to confidence and form.
Watson had to come from a set down in her Acapulco opener and she had plenty of battles along the way, including losing a hard-fought second-set tie-break in the final against talented Canadian teen Leylah Fernandez.
She should carry that confidence through to a clash against her sometimes doubles partner Tatjana Maria. The German’s best run this year was at the lower tier WTA $125k event at Newport beach, where she reached the quarter-finals, but apart from that her progress has been unremarkable this year.
Watson’s experience stood her in great stead over the Acapulco week, and the only concern will be the come-down and potential fatigue, especially after some particularly gruelling matches.
The German in general has a well-rounded game and balances her use of power and agility to good effect, but Watson has both the ability to switch between a more defensive game to aggressive play, and mentally has shown herself to be very strong this season, when perhaps previously she would crumble if the tide turned against her.
Watson is, however, a confidence player and right now she is soaring high and should have more than enough to come through this.
Prediction: Watson in straight sets.
