Johanna Konta def. Jessica Pegula [Q] 6-1 6-4
Although the score-line of the first set would suggest this was another one of Johanna Konta’s quick starts, it was Jessica Pegula who drew first blood, breaking the British No. 1 in the opening game. However, Konta fired back breaking three times in succession, reeling off six games on the spin to wrap up the first set.
In the second set it was Konta’s turn to break first and she had to work hard on the sixth game to hold on to her serve from a pressing Pegula in what turned out to be a fir more competitive set, before she served out for the match comfortably.

Konta v Wang Qiang | H2H: Wang leads 1-0
Where Konta is rooted in her routine (although she does admit that she is changing things up slowly but surely), she will come up against a determined shot-maker in Wang Qiang. The Chinese player has a win over Konta in 2016, the Brit’s breakthrough year, with a three set win in Shenzhen, and a walkover in Hong Kong.
Perhaps still a little under the radar, she might force Konta to change things up. She might not have played as many tournaments, but she has picked up back to back wins in successive tournaments this year, and picked off some big names last year in Wuhan, on her way to the semi-final.
Konta is a way away from the kind of form she displayed in 2016, but that confidence, born from four hard fought wins at Fed Cup, is returning slowly but surely.
It seems it will require the practice of battling through her matches, which hopefully makes victory all the sweeter.
Prediction: Konta in three sets.
