MIAMI, FLORIDA USA – After a run to the third round of Indian Wells, former Miami champion Johanna Konta returns looking to better last year’s fourth round run.

Johanna Konta v Jessica Pegula [Q] | First Meeting

With a former coach in common, it will be an intriguing start for the British No. 1 Johanna Konta when she faces US qualifier Jessica Pegula. Back in 2015, despite having had surgery the year before on her knee, Pegula was able to retain one Michael Joyce, who coached Konta last year.

However, fast forward to 2019, and Konta has some new found confidence in her present coach Dimitri Zavialoff.

After her Fed Cup heroics, Konta picked up a couple of good wins under her belt in Acapulco and Indian Wells, but still has a way to go to regain some of that gritty winning ways of late 2015 through to 2016. However, the green shoots of progress are there, even if her draw could pitch her up against Serena Williams in the third round.

Pegula makes good use of cross-court diagonal drives and accurately targeted drop shots to put the pressure on, and despite improvements of late, finesse at the net is still not necessarily Konta’s strong point.

Instead the Brit will look to dictate from the start, will play aggressively and if her serving is on point, then the rest of Konta’s game tends to come together with good effect.

Prediction: Konta in straight sets.
