Preview: Johanna Konta [17] v Magda Linette | H2H: First Meeting

Former Miami champion Johanna Konta arrives in need of some form, after a lacklustre start to the season in Australia. She faces Magda Linette for the first time. Linette missed the start of the season die to a minor surgical procedure on her knee, and her first round was her first match of the season.

Tournament Previous Best Title (2017) R3 (2016)
1st Serve Return Points Won % 38.2 32.3
Return Points Won % 42.7 50.8
Break Point Conversion % 44.4 66.7

Total Points Won % 48.7 50.5

What’s in a number (or indeed several)? If Linette’s numbers look solid, it is because she won her first match of the season! Konta has a bit of work to do this season though. She has not really been able to be effective in taking her break point chances, and in terms of saving those against her.

Playing Styles

The courts of Miami should lend themselves to Konta’s aggressive style of play, and she will hope she can get her serve firing, as the rest of her game tends to follow suit.

Linette will try and make Konta ran around all the live-long say as she will look to counterpunch the Brit to within the limits of sanity! Her favoured shot is her two-handed backhand, but her forehand is not to be sniffed at, with a decent amount of topspin. She is also very solid at the net thanks to her doubles prowess and while Konta has been charging to the net more, she perhaps lacks the finesse certainly to catch out a player like Linette. She would be better battering away with her drive volleys.

Prediction

This is actually a tough one to call. Konta’s shock abdominal injury during the Australian Open saw her take her time to come back, and arguably neither can be deemed particularly match fit.

Prediction: Konta in three sets.
