Despite her troubles this season, Raducanu just edges the higher ranked Kessler in all but overall service points won, which means we could have another tough battle on our hands.

Playing Styles & Prediction

Raducanu had to call on all her reserves to get through a tough match up with Navarro and will hope her blisters have had time to settle down as she takes on rising star Kessler. The American is another product of the highly successful college tennis system in the US and was a stand-out player at the University of Florida.

That intense competition sharpened her up nicely for her maiden title in Cleveland, and opened the season with a win in Hobart.

Both players have effective serves and strong baseline games and will both look to be the one dictating the points. We can also expect a battle of the double-handed backhands – clean weapons for both.

Raducanu has well demonstrated her abilities to think herself out of trouble in the match, and she will need to be able to match up Kessler’s strategic shot placement with her own instinctual game.

The hubbub over Raducanu’s coaching situation helped fuel her fire to advance, but the buzz of getting her first Top-10 win of the year, and her first on hard courts might evaporate.

Prediction: Kessler in three sets.
