Playing Styles and Predictions
After Ash Barty’s retirement, it’s been Swiatek’s turn to try and be the dominant force in women’s tennis and it’s so far so good for the Pole having not dropped a set this week.
Swiatek is now looking to achieve the sunshine double something that’s a rarity in Women’s tennis and build confidence towards the clay court season.
Speaking to the WTA website Swiatek admits she wants to chill before the final which she is looking forward to facing one of her best friends on the tour, “Even though it’s the middle of the night, I feel like I’m going to get some time to chill out today, because it was a really intense match and I had to give everything,” Swiatek said after beating Pegula.
“I am excited for sure [about facing Osaka in the final], but on the other hand for me, the most important job is this is a match like any other. I don’t want to change my routines, I don’t want to change my attitude, because it’s been working out pretty well. I’m going to treat it like any other match.”
For Swiatek to achieve the sunshine double she has to get past Osaka who has built her way to resurgent form in Miami this week.
Osaka’s impressive serving has been a barometer of her confidence with the three-time grand slam champion looking to conclude the tournament with a title and a climb up the rankings.
Also speaking to the WTA website Osaka praised her fighting spirit in her win over Bencic, “In the second set I just told myself, ‘Listen, if she beats you, someone is going to have to carry you off the court in a stretcher, because you’re going to fight for everything,” Osaka said after her semi-final win.
“I think I just got opportunities and I was able to see them as opportunities. So I was able to push myself through it. I’m honestly glad that this was such a tough match, because I feel like you need that learning experience, and I learned a lot from today. I was just telling myself, ‘This is a really good chance to show yourself how much you have matured … Just try not to repeat the mistakes that you have made before.”
Swiatek will look to dictate the points on her terms by being aggressive as early as possible and staying away from Osaka’s forehand and backhand range.
While Osaka will need to be consistent with her serving and groundstrokes as Swiatek’s transition from defence into attack is the best in the world right now.
Swiatek is looking to achieve a historic sunshine double while Osaka is looking to get back on track and return to the winners circle.
The tactical battle will be interesting and it will be about who can remain the most consistent and confident in the big points. Swiatek’s confidence gives her the slight advantage in what should be an epic final.
Prediction: Swiatek in three sets.
